Rio Grande River
6/28/20

The Rio has dropped and the clarity is great. Water temperatures in the afternoon are getting into the 60’s so morning and evening fishing is the way to go. There are still some Green Drakes and PMD’s hatching as well as some smaller stoneflies. Parachute Adams in a 10-12 has been working as a Drake imitation, as well as smaller Chubby Chernobyls. We have started to nymph more with size 16 Pheasant Tails and smaller green caddis nymphs being the go to.

Rio Grand Fishing Report

5/17/20

The river is still running pretty high but the clarity is great and water temperature is rising. Great streamer and nymph fishing right now. Big bugs are right around the corner.

Surrounding Lakes
The Creede area is rich with public access non-river fishing options. There are many lakes within an hour drive from town. These include Rito Hondo, Road Canyon, Rio Grande Reservoir, Spring Creek Reservoir and Love Lake. Stop in Ramble House for directions and recommendations. Stream Flow

Streams and Creeks
Feel like fishing some small water? This area is abundant with many small streams where you can catch fiesty (and often, native) trout. You will rarely bump into another person as you experience some of the best scenery in the area. These include Shallow Creek, Upper and Middle Rat Creek, Middle Creek, Willow Creek, and Ute Creek. Depending on what you are looking for and the current water conditions, we can always recommend streams for you.

Creede Guide & Outfitters also offers backcountry guiding. This service will teach basics on fishing and reading smaller waters.

Rio Grande River
Mid-September brings cooler weather and improved fishing with fish being caught on Hopper-Dropper Rigs as well as Streamers. Recommended patterns include, Hoppers in a 10-12 size range, Pheasant Tails 14-16, Prince Nymph, 14-16, and black Streamers in the 4-8 size range.

Rio Grand Fishing Report

04/03/2019
The upper part of the river is starting to break up. There is still a pretty heavy ice presence so fishing is still difficult. We expect the river to really be opening up by the middle of the month.

Rio Grande River

The Rio is currently un-fishable with almost all of the river being frozen over from the reservoir to South Fork. Typically around Mid-April the river starts to become fishable in large stretches.

Surrounding Lakes

Our lakes are currently frozen over and ideal for ice fishing. Many of the lakes are inaccessible except via snowmobiles. Weather dependent, ice fishing can be very productive this time of the year before the ice begins to melt.

Rio Grande Reservoir

FS Rd 520 is drivable up to Road Canyon, past that the road is closed. While fishing is productive, accessibility is difficult.

Road Canyon Reservoir

FS Rd 520 is open and plowed just past Road Canyon. Fishing has been productive and fish are active most of the day.

Love Lake

CR 523 is closed and is only accessible via snowmobile. While being one of the areas best “put-and-take” lakes, when it is not consistently being stocked fishing slows dramatically.

Spring Creek Reservoir

The pull off from Hwy 149 is usually plowed but not down to the reservoir. While fishable, we have not heard any recents reports.

Continental Reservoir

The pull off from Hwy 149 to CR 42 is plowed out for a staging area. The reservoir is only accessible via snowmobile. Fishing is very productive and has little pressure.

Rito Hondo Reservoir

Rito Hondo is still drained while the dam is being worked on. Will not be fishable until it is refilled and stocked.

Streams & Creeks

Most of the surrounding streams and creeks are frozen over and un-fishable. Around Mid-April they will begin to open up and become fishable.
